[ Abstract ]
The railways make up a technical yet representative element of
the impulse given to industrialization and urbanization in the
19th century. In Brazil, the railways were implemented
effectively only in the beginning o the 20th century. We analyze
the railways of Campina Grande city, in the Brazilian semi-arid.
This railway, as other built in the country’s interior, had the
main function of carrying the livestock other farming products,
but we argue here that it had a major impact as a urbanization
of Campina Grande, as well as it was the reason why this city
became a regional center of importance. This is research, thus,
has two geographical scales: urban and regional, or “intra” and
“inter” urban. Our main sources are the relates and reports of
the presidents of the province or state of Paraiba, as well as
the official reports of the Industry, Road and Public Works and
the Statistics of the Iron Roads.
