[ Abstract ]
The article aims to present some of the articulations between
railway expansion, consolidation of the territory and
structuring of cities in Brazil, indicating the plurality and
complexity of the routes followed between the end of the
nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth
century. For this we use in addition to the bibliography a vast
documentation that includes local histories, newspaper news,
annual reports of the railway companies, French consular
reports, reports of commercial agents. The association between
railroads, speed, mobility and progress was central to the
construction of representations about modernity. The research
reveals that the preconditions and particularities of each
locality have decisively interfered with the meanings that the
railroad brought to the organization of urban space. Creating
cities as in the Northwest, defining industrial cities as in
Jundiaí, being part of the constitution of a metropolis as in
Campinas and São Paulo, the impacts are undeniable but
different.
