[ Abstract ]

There are two aims in this paper. Firstly, it tries to make an estimation of the economic impact of Tourism in the balances of railways companies in the second half of 19th Century. It seems that this effect was significant in Norte, but only in this company. Secondly, the paper inquires into the consequences of the building of railway’s web over the development of the Tourism in Spain, specifically in the success or fail of the tourist resorts. Generally speaking, the railways satisfied a latent demand, but they did not create forward linkages in the tourist sector. For this reason, they were not a relevant factor in the location of the main resorts.
