[ Abstract ]

The commercial rise of Cadiz during the reign of Spanish Queen Elisabeth the Second attracted businessmen from several Spanish locations, and also from abroad, who revitalized the poor commercial life of the city, very damaged by the economic sanctions imposed by England, the French occupation and the loss of colonial possessions. The liberalization of verseas commerce and, in particular, the dissolution of the Royal Philippines Company, meant an opportunity to start thriving exchanges between the archipelago, the metropolis and the West Indies. The reinforced bourgeoisie of Cadiz took advantage of this new dimension of the Manila Run. This essay explains concisely the social and economic framework in which businessmen from Cadiz developed their professional activity and their characteristics as a social group throughout the description of
some of their most outstanding members.
