[ Abstract ]

The decline of the tram in Madrid, as in many other Spanish cities, was caused by the increase in the number of cars. In the capital city, this decline was accelerated by the opening, in 1919, of the first line of a metro network that would eventually comprise numerous tunnels and underground stations. The article analyses the construction and operation of the metro network from the first third of the 20th century up until the mid-1990s. The article is a review of the small body of existing literature about the principal mode of public transport which allows the capital to grow without disrupting its historical centre. This work ought to provide the inspiration for a comprehensive, in-depth study of this strategic service and the company that provides it, which throughout its history has experimented with all the possible forms of management.
