[ Abstract ]
This paper contains an evaluation of the macroeconomic effects of railway investments either undertaken in Spain during the nineties or planned up to 2007 within the national “Plan de Infraestructuras de Transporte”. We focus on GDP and employment effects due both to demand and supply shocks. Even if our exercise is relatively standard after the Aschauer work of the late eighties, it is based on a methodology quite different from the one upon which the historical analysis of railways following the approach of the “new economic history” are based. The results from any one of these methodologies, however, properly dealt with, should not be contradictory with each other.
