[ Abstract ]

In the year 1848, when the first railway line was open, Barcelona was a walled city. For this reason, Railway Companies built the stations and railway lines outside the walls, and they were not interconnected. Throughout the second half of the 19th century, the commercial mergers of different Railway Companies determined the need to build rail links between all stations in the city.

To do so various plans were designed, since 1859, to construct rail links within the city, but they were partially implemented and Barcelona never had a rail network able to meet the actual demand of passengers and goods which increased in the city during the 20th century.

Today, in the suburban rail network of Barcelona, thousands of passengers suffer every day the consequences and inconveniences arising from these lack of foresight.
