[ Abstract ]
The crisis of the 1930 determined the turning point in the argentine history. In the ´30s the State Railways reach the farthest and the most isolated parts of the country, offering a passenger and freight transportation service integrating the north and the centre of the country with the port of the Santa Fe and the city of Buenos Aires, after 1938. The State continued the purchase of railway equipment (locomotives, carriages and wagons) and the building of state lines designed decades before as far as the resources were available. The crisis deepened operating problems rentabilited some a private lines which were passed over to State Railways (FCE).
In this paper we try analyze the public investment in the Argentine State Railways during the ´30s compared with the other investments in public works, particularly, in the development of highways. To do this we rely on the information from the Annual Memory of the National General Accountancy.
