[ Abstract ]

This paper takes a look at some of the aspects of the industrial towns, and particularly the railway towns, that were built in Spain during the second half of the 19th century. With specific reference to these places, the analysis seeks to explain the relationship between spatial and social organization and how architecture and town planning helped to shape an environment that corresponded to a new conception of labour relations. An attempt has been made to contextualize the railway town concept in relation to a broader view of industrial towns in the international sphere, as well as to trace the historical evolution of these settlements, from their first known manifestations to their peak during the Industrial Revolution. Finally, the paper offers an interpretation of space and its forms in order to provide a better understanding of the way in which workers and their families worked and lived together when they realised that the railway presented an opportunity for progress and greater social benefits.
